Meade County’s Frank Mudd grows Second Largest Watermelon Ever!

September 5, 2019

BRANDENBURG, Ky. – The fourth annual Great Pumpkin Pursuit and Giant Watermelon Weigh-off, was held Sept. 21.  Roberts Family Farm in Guston hosted the event. This year, the giant fruits came from ten different states. Kentucky Giant Pumpkin Growers Association’s along with Meade County’s Cooperative Extension Services and Meade County Tourism co-sponsored the event.

Meade County’s own giant pumpkin and watermelon grower Frank Mudd, Flaherty resident, broke the Kentucky State Record and now holds second place for the Largest Watermelon Ever Grown. He grew a whopped that tipped the scales at 341 pounds.

“This is one of my favorite things to do”, Mudd said. “I am an outside person, and I am looking forward to spending time with other growers who spend their time watching watermelon and pumpkins grow so rapidly.”

Rhonda Roberts said her family is honored that the farm was selected to host the event. The farm has provided fall activities such as hayrides, a corn maze and a pumpkin patch for 17 years.

“Quality time for families and bringing people together is what we’re all about, and this event is going to extend that,” she said.

First prize for pumpkins is $1,000 and first prize for watermelons is $1,000. The growers of the top 10 pumpkins and top ten watermelons will earn prize money.
